Chateau de Bazoches
This stunning castle was built in the twelfth century on the site of an old Roman post at the gateway to the Morvan forest. It has a direct view of Vézelay and has hosted many famous visitors including Richard the Lion Heart who stopped at Bazoches at the beginning of the third crusade. Vauban acquired Bazoches in 1675 after receiving a reward from King Louis XIV for his military advice which led to success at Maastricht. Vauban then turned the castle into a military garrison and set up a team of engineers within the large gallery to carry out studies and plans for more than 300 works and fortified towns for the King. The current owners are direct descendants of Charlotte Vauban, elder daughter of the Marshal.
The MCF visit to this castle can be adapted to the requirements of individual groups depending on numbers and age. We can prepare a tour of the castle, games and treasure hunts as well as linking this to visits of Vézelay and Avallon with a focus on the work of Sébastien Vauban and his place in French history. This is a good option for older groups who are looking for a real combination of French culture, history and language. Depending on the time of year we may also be able to organise a tour and interview with the owner to give a real insight into life 'behind the scenes'.
For further information and a virtual tour of the castle please visit their website.
There is an additional charge for this visit depending on the number of pupils and the choice of activities.
